More women than men are affected by varicose veins. As both men and women age, the possibility of developing varicose veins increases. Varicose veins are raised, large, swollen blood vessels that typically develop in the legs, usually on the back of the calves or on the inside of the leg. However, varicose veins can develop elsewhere on the body as well.

These purplish blue veins appear distorted, twisting and turning under the skin, and can be unsightly and embarrassing for some people. Once these veins develop, women often don't feel comfortable wearing shorts or swimsuits anymore. There is an option to help women (and men) feel more at ease.

Varicose vein makeup helps to make these colored, and sometimes bulbous veins less visible. The other option is to darken your skin with sunless tanning lotion. As with facial makeup, the key to making body makeup appear like your real skin is to use a product that matches the color of your skin.

First, test the color of a concealer over your foundation. That sounds backwards, doesn't it? This is simply a test to make sure you have the correct shade of concealer. If you are unable to see the effect (it's invisible), you have the correct shade. To apply the makeup for daily wear, first put on the concealer, and then apply an opaque cream-based product to cover the vein and the surrounding area completely. Follow up with the powder that matches the shade of foundation, which "sets" the makeup. That way, it is less likely to rub off or smudge your clothing.

You'll get the best results from using a large, fluffy brush, but if you prefer to use your fingers, use your ring finger, as it is weaker and will leave the makeup intact. There are even a few products that will not only cover the unsightly varicose veins, but contain a basic sun protection factor (SPF).
